The history of Cabo Blanco
The Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve was the first protected area in Costa Rica, and was declared a protected reserve in 1963. The area which is now home to a huge number of wildlife species, was one of the few regions to survive the cultivation trend in the 1950s. The Costa Rican government enlisted the help of the locals to develop the land of the Nicoya Peninsula, and would be rewarded with ownership of the land that they had cleared.
A couple by the name of Nicolas Wessberg and Karen Mogensen had travelled from Europe to purchase a piece of land near Montezuma, and continued to visit Cabo Blanco to collect seeds to cultivate their orchards back at the farm. When Nicolas and Karen visited a small piece of uncultivated forest, they fell in love with the diverse variety of wildlife and plant species. They soon decided to preserve the area and along with the help of conservation aids, they purchased 1,250 hectares of land and awarded the area the name Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve. This was also the first step taken by Costa Rican officials to develop the country’s vast number of eco tourist opportunities. The Cabo Blanco Reserve may have been the first in the region but it is now one of many awe inspiring reserves and sanctuaries, including two spectacular conservation reserves named after the founders of eco-tourism in Costa Rica – Nicolas Wessberg and Karen Mogensen.
