The history of the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park
The Alejandro de Humboldt National Park was a very sparsely populated region and was only discovered to be inhabited by slaves who had escaped in the pre-Columbian era. While the archaeological importance may seem small on a global scale it is the wealth of the natural eco systems which have been known to captivate and intrigue tourists from all over the world. This protected region was founded in order to prevent the extinction of a number of endangered species including the woodpecker, which had already faced extinction in a number of other Central American countries. In order to protect these species as well as a number of other native fauna and flora species the site was named an UNESCO Heritage Site in 2001. While the park was made up of smaller protected reserves, it was decided that the park as well as its neighbouring parks should unite, and thus the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park was born. Special consideration was given to the name by naming it after a German scientist who was passionate about Cuba’s eco systems.
