Itinerary
Welcome to India! Your tour of Northern India begins in the beautiful and diverse city of Delhi. If you arrive early enough you can start exploring this fascinating 3000 year old metropolis. Soak up the unique atmosphere as you stroll through lively streets and discover many intricate temples and mosques.
Overnight Stay
In the morning you'll meet your guide and fellow travellers. Once you've met your group you'll have the whole day to explore Delhi. Old Delhi is a bright, bustling, cosmopolitan area with many winding streets and meandering markets. You'll also find some of the older, more historic temples and mosques in Old Delhi. We recommend visiting the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, the largest and (some say) most beautiful mosque in India. New Delhi is a modern metropolis with long, wide, and straight streets, pavilions and parks. Between the buildings there are hundreds of monuments; each one telling a story about the city's historic past.
Overnight Stay
After breakfast we'll leave Delhi and drive to Agra, the home of the world-famous Taj Mahal. This scenic trip will take about 5 hours, depending on traffic. Once you've arrived you can spend the rest of the day discovering this idyllic town for yourself. There are many enchanting sites to behold, such as the Agra Fort, the sister building to the Taj Mahal, and the city with many colourful bazaars where you can shop for fascinating souvenirs. Even if you don’t feel like shopping, the unique atmosphere of an Indian bazaar makes wandering through one a fun and worthwhile experience.
Overnight Stay
Today you'll leave Agra and go to Fatehpur Sikri, an ancient walled city that was formerly the capital of the Mughal Empire (entrance optional). The remains still testify to the wealth of the city in its heyday and consist of well-restored and well-kept palaces. The most impressive sights are the Jama Masjid Mosque and the supposedly largest gate in all of Asia, Buland Darwaza. From there, you'll continue to Abhaneri where you will stop to admire the step wells, which are famous in India and most of which date back to the 8th century. Finally, you'll reach Kalakho, a quiet place where you can get to know Indian country life. In the evening, take a stroll through the streets and watch traditional sushi being made.
Overnight Stay
Today, the journey continues to the 'red city' of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. Located in the north, this city is surrounded by hills dotted with forts and palaces. The streets are full of men wearing huge turbans and beards, and women who are adorned with jewelry and colorful saris.
Overnight Stay
You'll have all of today to explore whichever of Jaipur’s attractions you find most interesting. We recommend that you visit the famous Amber Fort, just 15km Northeast of the city. Amber was the regional capital for 600 years and the actual fortress is situated in a strategic position on a hill. It'll take you about 10 minutes to walk to the top of the hill, where you can then admire the fortress’ many marble statues and vibrant mosaics. If you’re not interested in walking you can also take a Jeep.
Overnight Stay
The next stop on the tour is the beautiful white city of Pushkar, which is named after the sacred lake it was built around. Here you'll find the most important Brahma temple, the Jagatpita Brahma Mandir. This beautiful temple offers a spectacular view of the city and the lake but to gain entry you must observe the dress code. The city is known for its Camel Fair, which is held annually in either October or November.
Overnight Stay
After an early breakfast we'll embark on a long but worthwhile drive. The first stage leads past the spectacular area of Nag Pahar (Snake Mountain). Eventually, we'll arrive in the picturesque white town of Udaipur, a beautiful city known as ‘the city of lakes’. Here you'll find many palaces, havelis, parks, and gardens to visit. One of the world's finest hotels, the Lake Palace, is found here, right in the middle of Lake Pichola.
Overnight Stay
Today you have a free day in Udaipur. There are lots of palaces and temples to see including the Jagdish temple, a spectacular Hindu temple located in the bustling city center. There are also numerous other points of interest just a short distance from the city, such as Eklingji, famous for its temple dedicated to Shiva, and the Jain temples in Nagda.
Overnight Stay
Today our journey continues onwards to the mighty Chaumukha Temple in Ranakpur, one of the most impressive Jain temples in all of India. Here you'll see the incredibly detailed masonry which has made the temple famous. The complex was built in the 15th century and has 1,444 unique columns. Our final destination for the day is the walled 'blue city' of Jodhpur, known as the gateway to the Thar Desert.
Overnight Stay
Once again, you'll have the whole day to spend at your leisure. Jodhpur has an enormous hilltop fortress at its center, the Mehrangarh Fort, from which you'll have a fantastic view of the blue-painted houses, the same houses that gave the city its nickname. The Mehrangarh fort along with the the Umaid Bhavan Palace are must-see attractions during your day in Jodhpur. The palace was only completed in 1943, shortly before the Maharaja of Jodhpur were forced to relinquish power. The Umaid Bhawan Palace is now one of the best hotels in the city.
Overnight Stay
Today we'll make the trip to beautiful Bikaner, a 6-7 hour journey. Here you'll discover more impressive forts, palaces, and public buildings, all covered in a distinct and stunning pink-red sandstone. You can still see camels pulling carts through the streets, as they have done for centuries. During your stay you should take a stroll down the main market street which leads to the imposing Junagarh fort. The wall of the fortress is about half a mile long, has 37 bastions and two huge doors. Inside you'll see beautifully restored temples and pavilions.
Overnight Stay
After breakfast we'll begin the scenic trip to the city of Nawalgarh which leads you through the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, known for its beautiful, frescoed houses and diverse population. In centuries past this was a caravan route from the ports of Gujarat and Maharashtra to Delhi and Central Asia. Because Nawalgarh is situated along what was once such a rich trading route there are still many magnificent houses, known as havelis, throughout the city. This is a fascinating place to explore. You'll stay either in Surajgarh or Nawalgarh overnight.
Overnight Stay
Decide for yourself what you want to do today. You can visit the villages of the Shekhawati region or take part in some optional excursion, for example a bike tour. On this bike tour you drive through the fields and villages and get to know the proud owners of the Marwari horses.
Overnight Stay
In the morning you'll have some more time to explore the ornate city of Nawalgarh. This is a great time to stroll through the bazaar and pick up some souvenirs. The Khedwal Bhavan building is an opulent structure well worth a visit and even if you’re not interested in architecture the Bala Quila Fort is a truly awe-inspiring complex. Around noon, your group will travel back to Delhi, where you'll spend your last night in India.
