Itinerary
Welcome to Costa Rica! Arrive in San José at any time today. We would gladly pick you up at the airport and drive you to the first hotel but you can also choose to arrange your own transportation. Check into our hotel and start exploring and enjoying this remarkable city, named in honor of Joseph of Nazareth. There is plenty of beautiful architecture for you to admire in this city. There are many elaborate nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings built in the Spanish style throughout San Jose, including theatres, museums, and houses in the city center. Do not miss a stroll through the Central Market.

After your first Costa Rican breakfast you will meet your tour-leader at 08:00 am in the hotel lobby. Your guide will take you to the first destination, Tortuguero, also known as “land of the turtles”. You will drive through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, a lush rainforest. On your journey you will see some of Costa Rica’s most picturesque views. We will pass through banana plantations, the main economical activity of the Caribbean area. Most of the sweet bananas you buy at the grocery store at home are produced right here in Costa Rica and the surrounding Caribbean countries. You will go to the port and catch a shuttle service boat to your hotel. If you keep your eyes open, you may already see some crocodiles quietly swimming, or monkeys jumping from tree to tree. The park is extremely biologically diverse since it incorporates eleven different habitats, including rainforests, mangrove forests, swamps, beaches, and lagoons. After you arrived at your hotel, you will take a boat ride through the canals and visit the Tortuguero village and the "Sea Turtle Conservancy Center".

There are plenty of other ways to see this region’s amazing forests! Today you will visit Tortuguero National Park which is principally known for being an important turtle habitat. Green Sea turtles (tortuga Verde, Chelonia mydas mydas, Species Account), leatherback turtles (tortuga Baula, Dermochelys coriacea), and Hawksbill turtles (tortuga Carey, Eretmochelys imbricata, Species Account) - all nest on the beaches here, so if you come at the right time of thr year you may get to see some of these beautiful little creatures hatch!

After breakfast we will leave tranquil Tortuguero and continue to Puerto de Santa Rosa de Pocosol, where you get a spectacular insight into the daily life of the Ticos who live on agriculture. This is a unique chance to get to know the habitants and authentically experience their traditions. After a warm welcoming you will be guided through the village and even may lend a hand with all work incurred. harvest bananas, cut sugar cane and enjoy delicious tropical fruits freh off the tree.

Today you will go on a hike through the ecological reserve Juanilama which leads to the waterfall La Leona, where you can refreh yourself with the clear water. In the middle of nature you have the chance to observe various types of animals, especially many different frogs. If you are lucky you may even see some pakas, agutis or rare howling monkeys. After a joint dinner we are going to have a cheerful little party. Amuse yourself by dancing Merengue, Cumbia or Salsa.

La Fortuna de San Carlos is one of the main tourist destinations in Costa Rica and Central America. Here you can visit the famous Arenal Volcano, the only active one in all of Costa Rica. Maybe you are lucky and will see a spectacular volcanic eruption. La Fortuna offers you unique opportunities to experience adventures in a tropical environment.

Spend another exciting day in La Fortuna! Go hiking, kayaking, rappelling, take a rafting class, go cycling, riding or simply bask in the surrounding nature, there are nearly no limits! Your next destination is sunny Samara. This beautiful coastal hamlet is a paradise on the western shore of the Nicoya Peninsula. Known for being one of the prettiest and safest beaches in all of Costa Rica, Playa Samara has soft white sand made smooth by the gentle turquoise tide. Take the chance to snorkel and dive at the offshore reef and feel the spirit of the vivid community consisting of indegenous and immigrants living harmoniously together. The local village has some great places to shop, lovely restaurants, charming hotels, and a few bars. Those interested in the nightlife should check out one of the local discos which stay open all night!

Samara's laidback vibe is the perfect atmosphere for rest and relaxation. Locals support the maintenance of the mangrove forests in the surroundings. Sport fishing is a popular activity off the coast, as it is snorkeling and scuba diving around the local coral reefs or surfing, stand up paddleing and riding. Visit the art gallery and admire the work of local artists. A short one-mile (2 km) walk down the beach brings visitors to the Tico hamlet of Matapalo, a great snorkeling spot. For birdwatchers, Chora Island, which is located just off the coast, is home to flocks of curious birds which are best seen from a kayak. This is also a wonderful place for a simple, calming swim in the sea!

From the Beach to the Cloud Forest Monteverde, which is a major ecotourism destination in Costa Rica. After checking in to our hotel, we will visit el Trapiche for a tour of a local farm. Here you will see a small tilapia pond, banana trees, plantains, arracache, evergreen macadamia trees, orange tree, fields of sugarcane and coffee plants. You may even tast tipical regional food.

Today you will have the whole day to do optional activities discovering the Cloud Forest. Your leader can help you arrange activities in advance. Monteverde includes several exciting areas to visit and things to do, such as the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve or the Butterfly Gardens. Monteverde is world famous for adrenaline tours. Here you can ride the longest zipline in Latin America, Bungee Jump, swing on a Tarzan swing, cross hanging bridges, go on a night-walk through the jungle and more!

After this unique adventure we will continue to next destination: Quepos. Quepos is a small harbor town famously known as one of the best places in the world for big-game sport fishing and the gateway to the national park Manuel Antonio. There are a variety of outdoor adventure options but the city itself is also very exciting! Quepos has a vibrant nightlife and the village center is composed of six blocks of restaurants, bars, hotels, art galleries and gift shops. These are all right next to the main beach and sport fishing fleet. The city is located in the northern part of the Puntarenas province on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast. For centuries the city lived from exporting bananas, today the palm oil plantations are of even a higher importance.

Today we have an excursion to the Manuel Antonio National Park, the smallest and possibly the most visited national park in Costa Rica. The primary attraction is the collection of 4 sandy Pacific beaches. The Main Trail through the park is a 1.3 mile flat, sandy path which links the beaches together and passes by some mangrove stands. When you head away from the beaches you will likely find yourself in a lush rainforest traversed by several trails. This is great place to see bright and exotic birds! Because the park attracts so many visitors, the best time to visit is early morning or on weekdays.

After breakfast we will travel to sunny San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital city. You can plan the rest of the day as you please. Seize the opportunity to see another wonderful attraction of Costa Rica: the Volcano Poás. San Antonio is the perfect place to shop and get pictures with the elaborate colonial architecture.
